Drastic security measures are to be taken following recent criminal attacks on tourists landing at OR Tambo International Airport, the Tourism Business Council of SA (TBCSA) said on Tuesday.
TBCSA chief executive officer Mmatati Marobe said the tourism industry collectively was deeply concerned about the crime rate and would not sit back and allow criminals to continue terrorising their client base and communities.
"We are, in the first instance, mobilising members of the tourism industry to participate in efforts that will provide safety and security to our people and our visitors."
She said the industry was working very closely with police.
"We will put all efforts in a joint manner with the police in the quest to have a safe environment.
"In the North West the industry through collaboration between Business Against Crime (BAC) and the Southern African Tourism Services (SATSA), is piloting a tourism safety and security project which will be rolled out into other areas in due course."
The tourism industry was also consolidating a safety and security strategy in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, to be launched by Minister Marthinus Van Schalkwyk shortly, Marobe said. - Sapa
