On Saturday between 11am and 3pm you can catch Talent “Mzukulu” Mbatha, a versatile bassist, arranger, composer and studio engineer.

Mbatha’s performances draw in audiences across the world.

Born in Nongoma KwaZulu-Natal, Mbatha studied at the University of KwaZulu -Natal.

“As a young boy I used to go to church with my family, that is when I started playing the keyboard at the age of 13.”

He said his love for music was inspired by the late Maskandi performer Mfaz’ Omnyama.

“Mfaz’ Omnyama’s house was a few houses away from where I used to live. I loved and listened to his music,” said Mbatha.

He said the musical highlights of his career were touring the world and playing for South African singer and humanitarian Yvonne Chaka Chaka and performing at the Koroga Festival in Kenya, London and Botswana.

Mbatha said he uses the name Mzukulu, which means grandchild, to honour his grandfather.

He said people attending the musical session should expect joyful music.

On Sunday between 1pm and 5pm, you can hear uMlazi-born trumpeter and composer Thabo Sikhakhane, brother to New York’s New School University alumni saxophonist, Linda Sikhakhane.

The Social Galley is aimed at supporting local businesses affected by Covid-19.

This initiative is partnered with the regional office of the Department of Arts & Culture and the Notha Empowerment Youth Programme, an NPO based in Chesterville and is providing a platform to grow and nurture local fashion, clothing, home decor and food entrepreneurs at one funky and safe location.
